The TUULLIIT homes are intended to save society from rental costs when members of the County Council from outside are in Nuuk to participate in the County Council's meetings.
The task was to design simple 2- and 3-room homes on two levels, where the smaller of the two homes is just as attractive as the larger one. This was solved by giving the 2-room homes double-height rooms with a good sense of space, where the 3-room homes have their extra room. The size and layout of the homes is somewhere between a private home and a small, functional hotel apartment.
Variety has been a key word, partly because the joy of living in a varied building is greater than living in a monotonous building, but also because varied buildings can achieve a longer lifespan than monotonous buildings. The small variations save more over time than they cost extra during construction.
The building is adapted to the fine scale of the area and the depths of the houses give a lively roof edge that is accentuated by steel shelters from which built-in light is thrown down onto the decks and stairs. The small variations make the building lively and inviting and give the area a general lift. The facades are clad with heat-treated wood that is allowed to patina and turn gray over time so that operating costs are kept very low.
In addition to 2 and 3 bedroom homes, both of which come in a narrow and a wide version, there are 2 bedroom homes with increased accessibility as well as a communal house for smaller events.
