NUUK
Cancer Patients' House Neriuffik
Project: Neriufffik
Client: Steering group consisting of Neriuffiit Kattuffiat (Cancer Control in Greenland), Cancer Control in Denmark and the Greenland Self-Government.
Realized: 2024-2026
Sub-consultant: Inuplan A/S
With this building, the fight against cancer in Greenland will have its own headquarters as well as important 'living space' facilities based on Danish and English models. Neriufffik means 'a place where there is hope' in Greenlandic.
In short, Neriuffik forms a link between the diagnosis a patient has been given by the hospital system and the new everyday life he or she must prepare for with his or her family. The staff is trained to help and guide patients on everything from the course of the illness to exercise, and in addition to counseling, the building is used for open events and provides a setting for fundraising.
Neriuffik is centrally located in Nuuk, close to the corner of Qatserisut and Aqqusinersuaq, where the building has parking. There is a drop-off zone outside the covered main entrance where you can wait in shelter.
All distribution areas are connected by a large and homely lounge area, which, for reasons of discretion, is equipped with high-backed chairs and open shelves to divide the functions.
The breakfast corner with access to the terrace is centrally located in the building, making it easy to welcome new visitors. The kitchen is open to employees and users of the building, so socializing can be mixed carefully.
There is also a family room for patients who need to be with their family in a private atmosphere for a period of time. This room has its own kitchenette and toilet, as well as access from the family room to the terrace.
The short distribution corridor leads to the large hall, which is used as a training room and head office for large collections. Four offices for administration and advice open onto the corridor with large glass panels and have panel curtains for discretion.
The building closes to the north and opens to the south and west. The terrace facing the courtyard is adapted to the mountain and the foundation utilizes the free height under the hall for basement storage.
Gross area: 372 m²
Covered landing: 24 m²
Neriuffik is being performed with financial support from the Danish Cancer Society and the AP Møller Foundation.
Qarsoq design studio ApS has provided support to Neriuffiit Kattuffiat by carrying out the project's conceptual design without any fees .
