Pikialaarfik Multihall
Project: Pikialaarfik Multihall Ilulissat
Developer: Avannaata Municipality
Phase: Concept paper 2024
Pikialaarfik Multihal expands the connection between the hall and the cultural center.
Ilulissat Hallen has a unique location in the middle of Ilulissat and a certain conservation value, but is in need of a thorough renovation and updating of everything from changing rooms to activities. The hall was designed by Henning Larsens Tegnestue in 1975 as one of many identical model house halls, complete with 'its own, Danish mountain on the right corner'.
Sermermiut Kulturhus was added later, but the passage between the buildings is obstructed by a fitness room and the intermediate function rebuilds and enlarges the project into a new urban space for everyone.
Pikialaarfik's purpose is to promote social sustainability, joy of life and quality of life and to offer good settings for both daily activities and major events such as the Arctic Winter Games and fishing fair.
Over the years, a number of small roof overhangs and shelters have been added and will be removed. Parking will be moved to the roadside and will be replaced by pedestrian traffic, which will now be directed along the building.
Permanent benches on the corner sell handicrafts to pedestrian traffic.
The living room will have a new men's and women's changing room with level-free access and a large wardrobe for wet outerwear and shoes.
The rest of the ground floor is a large 'urban space' with playgrounds, games and a place for parents to relax. The 1st floor has an open-plan café that is also easy to reach from the auditorium's grandstand, and the 2nd and 3rd floors have additional activity rooms such as gaming, fitness, dance, music practice room and recording room, creative workshop, children's area, administration, etc.
The road for deliveries to Brugseni will be shifted parallel to the west to make room for the expansion. On the same side, the hall will have its depots, escape routes and gates for large objects at events.
