ILLUMINATED

Hotel 'North'

Ilulissat, local area C17
Developer: Tankeeraq Properties ApS
Phase: Political processing in connection with municipal plan amendments
Realization: Planned 2026-2028

There will be a severe shortage of accommodation in Ilulissat when the city's new Atlantic airport is completed in the winter of 2026.
The ice fjord's UNESCO status limits the possibilities for establishing new, central building sites. One solution is to build higher - and enjoy the view.

The developer currently owns Tankeeraq and Hangout Bistro, on whose location, up to 5 storeys are currently permitted, but the new airport will raise the barrier-free level from 73 to 75 m and with the 75 m could allow for a 10-storey building. The developer is also behind the city's current 5-storey hotel, operated by Best Western.

Architecturally, we have chosen to keep the building in as pure a form as possible, as it is large in relation to its surroundings and it should not attempt to compete with the beauty and drama of the ice fjord.

A hotel in this location will contribute to an offer for both visitors and residents of the city and will become an important and central meeting place for everyone at the hotel's café and restaurant.

The building is designed with a focus on optimal buildability. Vertical loads are carried out to and down through the facades or down through walls and columns, and good directional stability is ensured in all corners. The construction of steel or concrete elements is insulated on the outside and stands with a midnight blue, silk-matt climate shield.

The main roof has a diagonal pitch and black roofing felt. Small roofs (over the bay window at the main entrance and over the other entrances) are raised to copper quality, which over time oxidizes and speaks the same material language as lamps and the like.

Interior materials are intended as shown, but a possible external partner in the operation of chain hotels may have interior design standards to follow, which will influence the final choice of materials. The consultant will work to ensure that the building's lighting fixtures and signage are of high quality and can contribute to the experience of a quality hotel with well-chosen materials.

The long sides of the building are planned to be constructed with wide drainage ditches, crossed by the main entrance and stairs respectively. Drainage is directed to Kussangajaannguaq and Elisabeth Thomsen Aqq with a driving grate where necessary.

The hotel rooms Standard Double, Superior, Grand Suite and Family vary in net sizes from 17.6-36.4 m².

The gross floor area is 6,847 m².
